In 1986, bassist Ron Royce (Ron Broder), guitarist Tommy T. Baron (Tommy Vetterli) and drummer Marquis Marky (Markus Edelmann) issued their first demo tape »Death Cult« with the help of Celtic Frost’s Tom Gabriel Fischer on vocals (Fischer was also responsible for the lyrics).
A short while later, in early 1987, Zürich’s avantgarde metal pioneers inked a deal with Noise Records from Berlin. By that time, bassist Ron Royce had decided to take on the role as the lead singer of Coroner himself.
The first result was »R.I.P.«, the band’s debut album, which was issued in June 1987, receiving very good press feedback.
In 1988, Coroner’s studio debut was followed by »Punishment For Decadence«, again produced in West-Berlin, this time by Guy Bidmead at Sky Trak Studio. The band toured throughout Europe on a modest scale, before starting work on their third studio record.
For »No More Color« (1989), Coroner traveled to West-Berlin for the third time in a row. This time around, the producer was Pete Hinton, as guitarist Tommy Vetterli explains: “Yes, exactly! Pete Hinton was suggested by the label. Since he had produced some of my childhood favorite bands, like Saxon and Demon, we were really excited. Working with him went really well, he is an absolute English gentleman.”
The mix of the album was done at Morrisound Studios by Scott Burns in Tampa, Florida, a very prestigious place back at the time.
The most complex song on »No More Color« possibly is “Mistress Of Deception”, according to Tommy Vetterli “it definitely has some extremely difficult parts to play. I remember Marky saying before the album recordings that he was writing lyrics about the desert. That really inspired me, and I ended up writing the song in a few days.”
“Die By My Hand”, a much straighter number, was chosen as the single track for the album (coupled with “Tunnel Of Pain” and released as a 12” clear vinyl promo 12”).
In interviews back then Tommy mentioned that »No More Color« marked the first album on which the band incorporated groovy parts, instead of uncompromising technical thrash metal all the way through. Today, he still thinks that this is true: “Yes, through all the touring, we learned that between the fast and complex sections, you need to play some simpler and groovier parts. It comes across much better live and makes the audience happy too. The album is a lot more focused on mood and feeling and less of a showcase of technical prowess.”
