For the first time in history!!!

An absolutely pioneering record guide, presenting in detail all – in the author’s opinion – rock albums recorded in former Czechoslovakia between 1964 and 1979. The publication has been granted honorary patronage by the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Warsaw.

This is the first volume in the series Rock Behind the Iron Curtain, within which further books will be released successively, each offering in-depth coverage of rock vinyl records from subsequent countries of former Eastern Europe – up to the year 1979.

The book is an excellent choice both for those who would like to begin their adventure with Czechoslovak rock, and for collectors and connoisseurs who want to have all the information organized in one place.

A highly attractive visual publication, bound in a hardcover, format 25cm x 19,5 cm printed in full color on elegant paper, it contains over 600 color reproductions – mainly of album covers, but also of labels and all kinds of inserts and extras included with the vinyl editions discussed.

Across nearly 300 pages of the guide you will find the most important artists from the Czechoslovak rock scene, including Modrý Efekt, Collegium Musicum, Olympic, Pavol Hammel / Prúdy, Flamengo, Dežo Ursiny, The Matadors, Framus Five, Jazz Q, Synkopy 61, as well as somewhat lesser-known or unjustly forgotten acts such as Gattch, George & Beatovens, Progress Organization, Ota Petrina, Jiří Schelinger… In total: more than 50 artists. From beat, through rhythm and blues, psychedelia, blues rock and progressive rock, all the way to jazz-rock, fusion, and late-1970s art rock.

Each entry includes a biographical note on the artist or band, containing not only the most important facts, curiosities, and information on lineup changes, but also detailed reviews of all their singles, EPs, and compilation albums – and in selected cases, also the most significant CD compilations. These descriptions are accompanied by over 250 color reproductions of single sleeves, EP sleeves, compilation covers, CD releases, and the related vinyl labels.

If a given artist also recorded full-length LPs, their detailed discussions (usually track by track) are included within the same biographical entry. Each LP review is enriched with reproductions of ALL fronts, backs, gatefolds, inserts, booklets, posters, and labels connected with that release – sourced exclusively from its first vinyl editions. In total, that is over 350 color photographs.

Full-length albums are rated on a scale from 1 to 10.

At the end of the guide you will find reviews of the most important compilation albums, as well as rankings of the best Czechoslovak rock records – presented by genre and style.
