SIEGES EVEN - Steps CD

The debut album "Life Cycle" (1988) by the Munich band SIEGES EVEN was already a culture shock. Journalists helplessly tried to describe progressive thrash with terms like "jazz metal", while metal fans reacted either with enthusiasm or with a big question mark over their heads. Nevertheless, everyone understood that this was one of the best musical bands from Germany. Two years later, they went one step further with their follow-up "Steps"...

The thrash element was reduced almost to zero, but they mercilessly demonstrated that they had once again gained skills in the past few months. The band, which was still young at the time, played at a level that was unparalleled in European heavy metal. Only in America did Watchtower or Dream Theater deliver similarly intricately arranged material. In true Rush tradition, "Steps" features a long song on the A-side (25 minutes!), while the B-side boasts five tracks and an outtro. The piece "Corridors" is another example of the incredible talent of the young musicians. Overall, "Steps" is more independent than "Life Cycle," which was still strongly reminiscent of Watchtower. With the vocals of Franz Herde, who was not heard on the follow-up, the first chapter of Sieges Even comes to a close here.

"Steps" was recorded in 1990 at Lakeside Studios by Charlie Bauerfeind, who is now a well-known producer. Despite the demanding material, the album was a success. Today, "Steps" can be found on many lists of the most important prog metal or prog rock albums. It hasn't been available since the original pressings on Steamhammer/SPV! The CD and LP were mastered separately to ensure each medium achieves the best possible sound.
